Wood engraving

Gutenberg’s Army

Inspired by the phrase “Give me twenty-six lead soldiers and I will conquer the world” shows the power of print to educate and spread knowledge. 26 lead soldiers refers to the 26 letters of the alphabet formed in moveable metal type invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century.

Before Gutenberg’s invention, books were handwritten in Latin and only a few people could read. The innovation changed the world, bringing literacy and education to the masses, which in turn led to scientific advancement as well as political and religious revolutions.

These prints are original wood engravings. I engrave on boxwood or lemon wood blocks using traditional hand tools. Then I ink up the block and print the edition one at a time. Each print is an original artist print.

No. of prints in edition: 30

This print is made using Lawrence Original Linseed Oil Relief Ink. The formulas used to create these inks have been in use for hundreds of years and are “free from animal-based or derived ingredients, made with linseed oil, not honey or gelatine”. The paper is archival and acid free.

Each print is signed, titled and editioned in pencil below the image.
